Apple may soon allow users to share the location of lost or missing items, such as an iPhone, MacBook, or an Airtag-equipped object, with individuals outside their contacts using a link via the Find My app.

MacRumors uncovered this feature in the iOS 18.2 developer beta, highlighting that Apple intends it to help users track down lost items by sharing their location with people like a taxi driver or airline staff.

The updated Find My app in iOS 18.2 introduces a new “Share Item Location” option, generating a shareable link to the missing item’s location. Anyone with the link, even non-Apple users, can open it on any device to attempt to track the item. The link expires either after a week or once the item is returned.

Another new feature is the “Share Contact Info” option, allowing any phone to connect with an item and view a webpage displaying the owner’s phone number and email if these details were added to the item’s contact page. This seems aimed at helping the person who finds the item get in touch with the owner.

Currently, Find My already enables sharing an item’s location with people in your contacts, but this update expands that capability. It also provides users with the ability to view statistics, such as how many people have visited the link.
